The first batch of 226 aspirants for the Soldier Nursing Assistant category and of sipoy rank appeared for the examination at the recruitment zone in Southern Command from 8 am-4 pm over Friday and Saturday. Developed by city-based Eklavya Infosys, the method titled Computer Based Entrance Test (CBET) would be applied to all 14 recruiting zones by early next year.
"Pune is the first centre where CBET is being implemented in the country. The process involves centralisation of data and evaluation of answersheets. The results can be declared faster," said Colonel Bharat Dabral, director recruiting, Recruiting Office (HQ). Brig Manohar Thomas, DDG recruitment, (Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa), was present.
CBET is the advancement of the first step that involved computerisation of the recruitment rally about two years ago. "Going online has introduced in the examination system, the much needed transparency. The process starts with the rally and involves body measurements, medical tests, physical records and so on, all of which are stored in the system along with candidate's thumb impression. This makes the data authentic. Personal biases, if any, are avoided too as the system itself filters the candidates as per fed requirements," said Atish Bihani, director, Eklavya Infosys who have developed the system over the past three years.
The actual examination hall resembled a cyber cafe where candidates, who as per the slots given to them reported at a given time. Matching their thumb impression, they entered the hall and sat in front of the allotted computer system to appear for an hour- long exam. "The system then throws rapid questions on their screens," said Dabral.
The candidates, many of whom had come from places such as Sangli, Beed, Usmanabad and other such rural areas of the state for the exam also seemed to find it easy.
