Army majors, capts can apply for IPS

The government had finalised the limited competitive examination as the third mode of recruitment to IPS which includes captain and major-rank officers of the defence forces, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. Minister of State in the home ministry, Jitendra Singh, told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that officers of the rank of deputy superintendent of police of state police services, assistant commandants of Central paramilitary forces and captains and majors of defence forces fulfilling certain eligibility criteria are eligible for appearing in the examination. He said that the government has finalised the introduction of limited competitive examination in order to mitigate the shortage of directly recruited IPS officers. Government sources said that the Union Public Service Commission is expected to hold the limited competitive examination from 2012. As on 1 January 2011, there were 3,393 IPS officers against an authorised strength of 4,720.
